Before a tooth touches the ground, we file a Diggers Hotline (811) locate ticket, which is required by Wisconsin law. We also walk the site with you to flag private lines that 811 does not mark: invisible dog fence, irrigation, landscape lighting, LP gas runs, and septic laterals.
2. Access Planning & Lawn Protection
Next, the Gabe’s Top It or Drop It team will measure the gate and side-yard clearance to select the right machine. We then lay plywood or AlturnaMATS along the travel path so the grinder reaches the stump without rutting your lawn.
3. Grinding to Your Target Depth
The next step is to start the stump grinding process. We grind to the depth your project actually requires — lawn grade, replant grade, or construction grade. For peace of mind, we always confirm this with you before we start, not after.
4. Chasing the Surface Roots
Most companies grind the stump and leave the lateral roots coming up through the turf. We follow visible surface roots outward and grind them below grade, so your mower deck never finds them.

Stump grinding is not one service. Depth drives the price, the chip volume, and whether your next project actually works. Here is how we spec it:

If You Are Building on the Spot, Tell Us Before We Quote
Building codes generally don’t allow structural fill over decomposing organic material. A surface grind under a future shed pad will settle and crack it. We would rather quote the deep grind or excavation up front than have you discover the problem two years later.
Wisconsin's Diggers Hotline Law
Wisconsin Statute 182.0175 requires every excavator, including homeowners, to notify Diggers Hotline at least three business days before disturbing soil. Stump grinding counts. It is free, it takes minutes, and skipping it makes you financially liable for the full cost of any line you hit. Call 811 or use the Diggers Hotline online portal. When we do the work, we file the ticket. If you are grinding a stump yourself, you must file it.

What Happens to the Wood Chips?
Grinding a stump produces far more material than people expect. The wheel doesn’t just remove the stump — it fluffs the wood into shavings and mixes in soil, so the resulting pile is typically two to three times the volume of the stump you were looking at. A 24-inch stump ground to lawn grade commonly leaves a mound three to four feet across and one to two feet high.
You have three options, and we’ll price whichever you want:
- Backfill in place (included). We push the grindings back into the void and crown the fill. Lowest cost, no hauling. The mound will settle — see below.
- Backfill and haul the surplus. We fill the hole and take the excess away. Most popular choice for finished lawns.
- Full haul-away and topsoil replacement. We remove all grindings and backfill with screened topsoil. Best option if you're seeding, sodding, or planting immediately.
Why You Shouldn't Put Stump Grindings in Your Garden Beds
Stump grindings are not the same product as chipper mulch, and this is a common and expensive mistake.
- They contain soil, rock, and sometimes metal. Ground stumps pick up whatever was in the root plate, such as old fence wire, nails, and gravel.
- They tie up nitrogen. Fresh, fine wood particles worked into soil feed microbes that pull available nitrogen out of the root zone as they decompose. Plants growing in it turn yellow and stall. Chipper mulch laid on top of soil doesn't cause this; grindings mixed into soil do.
- They may carry disease. Grindings from a diseased stump shouldn't be spread across your property.
If you want usable mulch, ask us about chips from our chipper instead — that’s a different product, and we have it.

The honest answer is that roughly 90% of residential customers need grinding, not removal. Removal is the right call when you’re building, when the root plate sits inside a construction footprint, or when you’re dealing with an aggressively suckering species (below).
What Determines Your Stump Grinding Estimate?
- Root-flare, not trunk diameter: Price scales with the widest point at ground level, including any root hump. A tree that measured 20" at chest height may have a 34" flare.
- Grind depth: A replant-grade grind can double a surface-grind price.
- Species and wood density: Oak, hickory, hard maple, and locust grind slowly and eat teeth. Pine, poplar, and willow go fast.
- Access: If the machine has to come through a 36-inch gate, up a slope, or across a septic field, labor time goes up.
- Buried debris: Gravel, landscape rock, old fence wire, and concrete in the root zone chew carbide teeth. Tell us what's there.
- Slope and soil: Wet spring ground in the Fox Valley may require mats or a reschedule.
- Number of stumps: Mobilization is the fixed cost. Additional stumps on the same visit are dramatically cheaper per stump.

For the large majority of homeowners, grinding is the better choice. It's faster, less expensive, and confines the disruption to the stump's footprint rather than leaving a crater and equipment tracks across the lawn. Grinding turns the stump and root flare into chips, typically 8 to 12 inches below grade, which is more than enough to reseed grass, lay sod, or simply stop mowing around it.
Full removal, excavating the stump and root ball whole, makes sense in three situations: when you're building on the spot and code requires organic material out of the footprint, when you're planting a new tree in the same location, and when you're dealing with an aggressive suckering species like silver maple, poplar, or black locust whose root system will keep sending up shoots. Removal generally runs two to four times the cost of grinding and leaves you with a root ball to haul away.
How deep should a stump be ground?
It depends entirely on what you plan to do with the ground. Four to six inches below grade eliminates the trip hazard and lets you mow over the spot. Eight to twelve inches is the standard for reseeding or sodding, since it leaves room for a real soil root zone above the grindings.
Twelve to eighteen inches or more — with lateral roots chased out — is what you need before planting a new tree or building anything on the site. Ask any company you're considering what depth their quote includes. A surprising number quote a surface grind and let you assume otherwise.
How long does stump grinding take?
A typical residential stump takes 30 minutes to an hour of actual grinding. Setup, lawn protection, cleanup, and moving between stumps often take longer than the grinding itself, which is why the first stump carries most of the cost and each additional stump on the same visit is substantially cheaper. Large hardwood stumps over 36 inches, deep replant-grade grinds, and stumps with extensive surface root systems can run several hours.
What is the fastest way to get rid of a tree stump?
Professional grinding, by a wide margin. A commercial grinder reduces a typical stump to chips in under an hour. The alternatives are dramatically slower: chemical stump removers work by accelerating rot and take anywhere from six weeks to a year with repeated applications, and manual digging on a mature hardwood stump is a brutal multi-day job that still leaves you with a root ball to dispose of and a crater to fill. Burning is not a realistic option in most of our service area and is restricted or prohibited by many municipalities.
What is the cheapest way to get rid of a tree stump?
Doing nothing is free, and for a stump in a back corner of a wooded lot it's a legitimate choice — though in Wisconsin's climate a large hardwood stump takes 7 to 15 years to decay. Beyond that, chemical stump removers cost the least in materials but require months of patience and still leave you removing the softened wood by hand. Renting a grinder runs a few hundred dollars a day plus fuel, a trailer capable of towing it, and the real risk of hitting a utility line.
Remember that Wisconsin law requires you to file the Diggers Hotline locate if you're doing the digging, and you are liable for the full cost of any line you damage. For most single-stump jobs, the rental cost, the day of your time, and the liability add up close enough to a professional quote that hiring it out wins.
Can I plant grass over a ground stump?
Yes, but not directly into the grindings. Cap the area with three to four inches of screened topsoil first, then seed. Grass sown straight into wood chips comes in thin and yellow because the decomposing wood ties up the nitrogen the seedlings need. Expect the area to settle over the first year and plan on top-dressing once the following spring.
In Wisconsin, seed mid-August through mid-September for the best results, or mid-April through late May as a second choice.
Do I need a permit for stump grinding in Wisconsin?
For a stump on your own private residential property, a permit generally isn't required in Waupaca, Appleton, Oshkosh, Green Bay, Stevens Point, or the surrounding communities. But two things do apply. First, Wisconsin Statute 182.0175 requires a Diggers Hotline (811) notification at least three business days before any soil-disturbing work, stump grinding included — that's law, not a courtesy.
Second, trees in the terrace between sidewalk and curb are usually city-owned, and stumps in shoreland zones near the Chain O' Lakes, the Fox River, or Lake Winnebago may fall under DNR or county oversight. We check local ordinances during your free estimate.
